Dear
parents,
I cannot wait to work with your children in developing their artistic gifts! This semester we will be focusing on drawing and painting. I have 4 main focuses in my curriculum: 1) skill development 2) teaching students to connect art to themselves and the world they live in 3) art history and artistic development in various cultures and 4) creative problem solving. Due to the complex nature of the course students should be prepared to learn various artistic mediums, take notes and learn how art has developed in the world throughout various cultures, and challenge themselves to push their creativity and critical thinking skills though both discussion and project based learning.
Students will be assessed on the basis of growth in artistic skill, progress toward the Michigan art standards, work habits and learning historic and cultural artistic highlights. All lesson plans, rubrics, study guides and power points will be posted on the class web site: www.epplerart.weebly.com.
Also on the class web site www.epplerart.weeby.com student artwork will be posted following the completion of each project. Each week I select an “artist of the week” based on both artistic achievement and classroom performance (participation in discussion, citizenship and artistic and creative risk taking). Artist of the week is also highlighted in the Eppler electronic express.
Each semester I ask students to come to class with a set of materials. If a student is unable to get the materials I will provide the needed materials. As projects arise, students may be asked to bring in additional materials. You will find the list of material on the attached syllabus.
I am available for extra help and/or accelerated training on Mondays from 3-4. This is also a great time for students to make up time/learning that is missed during an absence. On rare occasion a student may not participate during class time and fall behind on a project. This time also becomes an opportunity for students to make up that missed learning time.
Please feel free to contact me any time you have questions, concerns or just want more information about what is happening in class. Again, I cannot wait to help your child grow in their artistic achievements and creativity! Please sign and return the bottom part of this letter so I may be assured you received both this letter and the syllabus. Also please indicate the best way to contact you.
Thank you,
Emily Ottaviano
